University Patron: Astafiej Vałovič

Astafiej Vałovič was a statesman of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the 16th century — an advocate of education, law, and humanism. He took part in drafting the Second and Third Statutes of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (1566 and 1588) and was among those whose initiatives led to the founding of Vilnius University. He also funded a printing house in Niasviž. In his will, he freed his serfs from bondage — an uncommon act for that time.

International Support for the University

An open letter in support of establishing the Belarusian Research University has been signed by more than 60 representatives of the international academic and civic community.

Among the signatories are Svetlana Alexievich, Nobel Prize laureate in Literature; Natallia Pinchuk, wife of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Ales Bialiatski; Stefan Eriksson, former Ambassador of Sweden to Belarus; Adam Michnik, editor-in-chief of Gazeta Wyborcza; as well as scholars from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, Austria, Norway, Belgium, Poland, Lithuania, Ukraine, and Belarus.

The authors of the open letter called for broad cooperation with the founding team and for support of the project at the level of governments and foundations.

Opening Opportunities and Working for Results – Together

We are building the University in partnership with organizations that share our values and are ready to act for the future of Belarus. We value cooperation with those for whom education, academic freedom, and social responsibility are more than just words.

We are open to collaborations that support teachers and students, help launch educational programs related to democracy, history, and contemporary Belarus, promote interdisciplinary research in the humanities and social sciences, and create public initiatives that advance education and present the Belarusian perspective in international forums.

We believe that such partnerships strengthen both the University and those who support it.
